About the doctoral school

The National Doctoral School of Anthropology was established by the University of Oran (accredited university) in partnership with the Universities of Tlemcen, Mostaganem, Tizi-Ouzou, Bejaïa, Constantine and under the direction of the Centre of Research in Social and Cultural Anthropology (CRASC). It is a renowned institution for training in anthropology, offering rigorous and comprehensive training to prepare students for careers in research and higher education.

The doctoral programme is divided into two cycles: Magister (2 years) and doctoral (4 years), with competitive admissions for graduates in sociology, psychology, demography and Tamazight language and culture. The School has always emphasised the quality of the supervision and training it provides, ensuring that its doctoral students have solid professional prospects in the academic world and beyond.

The Doctoral School in Anthropology has benefited from several successive renewals (demonstrating its ongoing commitment to academic excellence and its ability to evolve with the contemporary needs and challenges of anthropological research). Its primary mission is to train researchers capable of making a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge and teaching in this vital field.

Doctoral School of Anthropology Missions

  • Define the conditions for doctoral enrolment and ensuring compliance with the Theses Charter.
  • Disseminate doctoral training courses in collaboration with research teams.
  • Offer mobility support for doctoral students.
  • Guarantee the quality of supervision of doctoral students.
  • Organise presentations of thesis work.
  • Encourage international collaboration, in particular by promoting joint theses.

  • Anthropology of social change in contemporary Maghreb societies.
  • Anthropology of social practices of religion,
  • Anthropology of space and built heritage,
  • Anthropology of symbolic production.

The school has welcomed several magister and doctoral students:

Magister

  • Classes of 2006/2007 and 2008/2009: the fifty-one (51) students who completed their course regularly defended their Magister theses and are enrolled in the Doctorate programme.
  • Class of 2012/2013: eighteen (18) students defended their Magister dissertations and are enrolled in the Doctorate programme.
  • Class of 2014/2015: twenty-two (22) students completed their Magister course, sixteen (16) of whom defended their dissertation and are enrolled in a doctorate.

Doctorate

  • Class of 2006/2007: seven doctoral students enrolled in the first year of their doctorate and defended their theses.
  • Class of 2009/2010: two doctoral students enrolled in the first year of their doctorate.
  • LMD PhD class 2016/2017: six PhD students enrolled in the first year of the LMD PhD.
  • Doctoral class 2017/2018: six doctoral students enrolled in the first year of the LMD doctorate.
