History and the Relationship with National Memory
Abstract
The Ghriss region is renowned in modern history for the prevalence of scholars and jurists who settled across its lands, many of whom migrated from other territories in earlier periods. These scholars devoted themselves to documenting the lineages of the Ashraf (noble families) and their biographies, resulting in a diverse and extensive body of sources. At present, these texts serve as a wealthy scientific resource for the cultural, social, and economic history of the area. These records can be categorized into distinct groups based on their timeframe, geographical focus, and the specific scholarly families or prominent figures they investigate.
This seminar primarily discusses the nature of genealogical works concerning the Ashraf of the Ghriss region—ranging from primary sources and references to modern studies—and evaluates their significance in enriching national memory and local history. Furthermore, the discussion extends to the methodological handling of the historical data within these writings, assessing their credibility and their role in filling the gaps left by other historical narratives.
