Concept note
This year, CRASC commemorates the twenty-fifth anniversary of its founding and the twentieth anniversary of its journal, Insaniyat. This is an opportune moment to revisit Algerian society, which has undergone significant social and economic transformations since independence, necessitating periodic analysis and new approaches.

Research in the humanities and social sciences (HSS) progresses by taking into account the specificities of society and the policies adopted by public authorities. One of its primary objectives is the observation of various forms of change occurring in all areas of social life. Whether on a local or global scale, the role of HSS research is to grasp the challenges related to the evolution of our society and to develop an objective, constructive, and critical vision of lived realities.

In a rapidly changing society, the importance of HSS remains paramount. Significant demographic shifts, the labor market, urban transformations, the growing number of students and graduates, the role of women in society, the emergence of new beliefs, and the relationship with the past and memory are all subjects that deserve to be understood within the current context. Furthermore, the public policies pursued by successive governments warrant analysis in light of HSS research findings.

Through its research activities and based on its multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches, CRASC has been among the pioneering institutions to align its teams and expertise with ongoing societal and cultural transformations. Its role in HSS research has been major over the past twenty-five years and will become even more vital in the years to come to meet the challenges of the economic climate and social complexity.

The organization of this symposium provides an opportunity for the research community to reflect once again on present and future challenges. This meeting is not the first of its kind:

In 1999, we organized the conference "What future for anthropology?"

In 2004, the symposium "Algeria: The state of knowledge in social and human sciences (1954-2004)" was held.

The year 2012 was particularly productive for our center. The international conference "The future of social sciences in the Arab world" and the symposium "Algeria: Thinking about change. What are the contributions of social and human sciences?" allowed us to address issues related to social change. The questions raised during these events remain highly relevant today.

This meeting represents an opportunity to assess the current state of HSS research conducted at CRASC and other institutions. We hope to address the main themes of interest to the research community by examining the current status of HSS research and new research perspectives.

How is HSS research organized?

How can this research accompany societal transformations?

How can it address societal issues and meet the demands of life?

How can it influence public policy?

In what ways can the social sciences enable the evaluation of public policies?

These are the questions we wish to explore during this symposium to contribute to new analyses of our society and the world we live in.
