Biography
Professor Ahmed Djebbar is Professor Emeritus at the University of Lille (France) and a specialist in the history of Arab and Islamic mathematics. He was awarded the Algerian Scholar Medal in 2014, the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences Award in 2020, as well as several other prestigious international distinctions. A member of the Algerian Academy of Sciences and Technologies and the International Academy of the History of Science, he also served as Algeria's Minister of National Education and Minister of Higher Education. The lecture will explore the knowledge developed during the Arab period in the fields of geography and cartography, as well as its connections with the humanities, Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), and the natural sciences. It will highlight the expansion of the Caliphate's frontiers, the control of trade routes, and the advancement of knowledge concerning agricultural and medicinal resources. The presentation will also emphasize the contribution of geography to the medical sciences through an analysis of travelers' accounts, the geography of plants in the Maghreb and al-Andalus, and the influence of trigonometry on improving the accuracy of maps.

A Director of Research at the Centre for Research in Social and Cultural Anthropology (CRASC) in Oran (Algeria), she specializes in information and communication sciences. Her work focuses on media and communication studies, in both their traditional and digital dimensions, utilizing historical, political, sociological, and anthropological approaches. She currently leads an institutional research project within CRASC entitled: 'Dictionary of Personalities and Events in Algeria during the Period 1945–1954: Press, Health, and Education'. As part of a previous research project conducted at the same center, she examined the evolution of themes addressed in Amazigh language textbooks at the middle and secondary education levels. Her research thus lies at the intersection of media studies, language policies, and educational issues in Algeria.
