History and the Relationship with National Memory
Abstract
The history of certain cities is often inextricably linked with the history of their cemeteries. Far from being seen as neutral elements in the formation of the urban landscape, these sites play an active role in the various remodelings of urban space. This is precisely the case for Oran. Having endured a turbulent and violent political history, the city inevitably found itself intertwined with the story of its graveyards. If these grounds could speak, they would tell a story quite different from that of the city's living inhabitants.
This is why this work is intended, above all, as a brief overview of the historical conditions that governed the creation of cemeteries within the city's urban space—places of memory, or more poetically, an "Archipelago of Memory," as Paul Éluard fondly called them.
