Concept note
The discussions at this academic seminar fall within the framework of the "Literary Textbook Corpus for Textbook Authors" project (2018-2021), which, over two years of research, addressed the presence and types of literary texts in secondary school textbooks. It also explored the challenges of reconciling the educational and pedagogical goals of textbook authors with the artistic and aesthetic dimensions inherent in the nature of literary texts. Furthermore, research into the textbook production process in Algeria constituted a significant aspect of the project, aiming to analyze and evaluate its production mechanisms. This discussion seminar is one of the outputs of the project, and a continuation of the research work carried out at the Research Center in Social and Cultural Anthropology on the textbook and its contents (cognitive, ideological, educational, pedagogical, instructional...), in addition to various research that approached the topics of national identities and the issue of citizenship. A discussion seminar was previously organized at the center within the framework of the project on: The textbook and the question of citizenship in Algeria on 12/18/2019. The first theme of this symposium, entitled "Literary Texts in Textbooks," proposes to address the presence of literary texts in Arabic and French language textbooks. This involves an attempt to understand the mechanisms of text selection and to extrapolate the indicators that govern this selectivity. These indicators may be influenced by the author's ideology, the institution's ideology, the value system, or pedagogical goals. The symposium will also explore the positioning of the aesthetic and artistic aspects inherent in the nature of literary texts within these indicators. Furthermore, it will address the importance of reception and the development of artistic taste in students by examining the mechanisms for cultivating artistic appreciation and achieving enjoyment. The second theme of the symposium, entitled "Textbook Production in Algeria," proposes to continue exploring the manifestations of selectivity by analyzing the processes of textbook authorship and the selection of texts. The experiences of authorship, revision, and evaluation represent crucial indicators, and this will be the focus of the second session of the symposium. In addition to presenting the results of fieldwork conducted in this area, the various presentations will attempt to deepen the discussion in order to present, understand, and compare the perspectives and visions of stakeholders from different centers of influence. The symposium also aims to deepen the future research prospects of the project through the comparative approach that we look forward to completing and continuing to work according to a Maghreb vision that includes the three Maghreb countries: Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. This is what we started through the comparative statistical study of text corpora, and we aspire to continue it by trying to open up to the efforts of specialists in the two countries, and to expand the corpora of texts that the project will present as a final output of the research to include texts by writers from the three Maghreb countries.
