abstract

This book is the culmination of a project that we conducted at CRASC from 2016 to 2019 as part of the 'Cities and Territories' research division. The topic of Saharan agriculture is fully in line with one of the three research priorities of the Directorate-General for Scientific Research and Technological Development (DGRSDT). This involves food security, alongside energy security and public health. Although led by academics, this project is part of a vision of research/action in the service of sustainable development in the Sahara. Through the agricultural question in the Adrar region, in south-west Algeria, we want to analyse the complexity of human-environment interactions around access to and use of natural resources, more specifically water and land. As geographers, the members of the research team wanted, through this project, to perfect the methods of analysis in an area that is characterised by its territorial identity, the environmental fragility of its ecosystems and its strong natural and social potential.
