abstract

This translated book provides an objective study of the historical events that shaped political and commercial relations between Spain and Algeria during the Ottoman period from 1700 to 1830. A notable addition to this edition is the inclusion of extensive correspondence between the authorities of the two countries and their consuls during the wartime period, which began with the recovery of Oran and Mersa el-Kébir in 1708 and concluded with the campaign on Algiers in 1784. This is followed by a period of reconciliation that ultimately ended with the occupation of Algeria in 1830. Furthermore, the book examines the impact of these events on the Algerian Navy, prisoners of war, and various bilateral agreements. The aim of this collective translation is to highlight new aspects of the relations between the two countries that that have previously been overlooked or misinterpreted. The featured correspondence in the book consists of manuscripts preserved in key Spanish cabinets and archives, which are crucial for understanding the realities of Algeria during this period from a Spanish perspective.
