abstract

This collective book is the result of three years of research on the issue of preserving and transmitting the language-culture of origin within mobile populations. Conducted within the Research Division in the Anthropology of Education and Training Systems, these studies focused on Algerian migrant families observed both in France and during return visits to Algeria. The book presents findings from a CRASC research project entitled ‘Transmission of languages and LCO (Language and Culture of Origin) within the families of Algerian migrants in France: between cultural challenges and socio-professional success’, alongside contributions from colleagues specialising in these themes. Our aim was to consolidate various exploratory studies to enhance knowledge in this field and to gain a deeper understanding of family dynamics regarding linguistic practices, parental decision-making, and the maintenance of ties with the country of origin. The various studies mainly highlight the data and indicators of intra-familial linguistic and cultural transmission, alongside practices that further illuminate the processes involved. The approaches are mainly sociolinguistic and deal from different angles with the issues of employment, maintenance and intergenerational transmission of the language-culture of origin.
