abstract

Considered one of the greatest political and military leaders, Emir Abdelkader, Ibn Mohiédine, Ibn Mustafa, Ibn Mohamed (1808-1883) retains a tangible influence in the modern and contemporary history of Algeria. His reputation established him as one of the most distinguished figures of the 19th century, a status that ensures he remains a subject of both scholarly debate and extensive literature. The successes achieved through his political and military actions were widely echoed in many countries. He was highly regarded for his courage and commitment to a long and arduous resistance against French occupation, and his tenacity in defending his land, homeland, and identity despite overwhelming adversity. His patriotic stance brought him immense suffering, leading to his imprisonment at the Château d’Amboise in France and his subsequent exile to Damascus, Syria. Despite this constraining and painful situation, he made the most of it by devoting himself to writing and good works.
