abstract

Based on the singular career of the Algerian artist Abdelkader Guermaz (1919–1996), how might we understand the status and position of visual artists in Algeria during the era of French colonisation? This inquiry is also related to the issue of the plastic arts market in Algeria, a subject we have addressed in previous work, with a focus on the broader landscape of key stakeholders, galleries, classifications, acquisitions, art criticism, and art history, as well as the interactions between various artistic practices, etc. These two perspectives, the individual and the global, offer vital insights. Guermaz was a solitary and silent figure who lived in exile in Paris from 1961 until 1996; his life and career were defined by a striking tension between the hallmarks of high bourgeois culture and the realities of poverty. This book seeks to give meaning to these symbolic manifestations, taking an objective view through document analysis and a subjective one based on sensitivity and deep understanding.
