abstract

The themes explored in this volume on the City build upon the trajectory of ideas developed and published over the past twelve years at the National Center of Social and Cultural Anthropology. Within this fertile research landscape, we find it essential to routinely review the evolution of Algerian cities, their inner workings, and the harsh daily realities experienced by their populations amidst multifaceted conflicts between various stakeholders. Consequently, this work aims to reflect recent trends in urban studies and look ahead by identifying new avenues for exploration. Moving beyond strict urban analysis, this domain has inevitably evolved into a transdisciplinary research subject shared across the humanities and social sciences. Beyond merely accumulating knowledge, our primary goal is to provide a consistent, critical perspective on urban life. Ultimately, urban planning is inherently political; it is justified only by the presence of concrete problems requiring solutions, and its natural purpose must be to enhance the quality of life for residents in both the city and its periphery.
