abstract

A society's educational system -as Michel Crozier notes- reflects the social system of that society, while simultaneously serving as the essential means through which this system perpetuates itself. This statement encapsulates the core concerns of educational research, particularly the works of Bourdieu-Passeron on one hand, and Baudelot-Establet on the other. The Algerian school system is no exception to this thesis. Today's Algerian university is thus a reflection of contemporary Algerian society. However, both emerge as the products of a turbulent and eventful history. For many decades, and more precisely since the colonial intrusion (1830), both society and the university institution have continuously evolved and metamorphosed. Consequently, the modern Algerian university constitutes the ultimate product of these transformations
