abstract

By Muhammad Qadi stands as one of the oldest and most significant reference works in the field of malhun poetry in Algeria. First published in 1928 using lithographic printing, it met with considerable popular acclaim, rapidly selling out and becoming one of the rarest and most sought-after sources in the domain of local publications. Given its cultural and scholarly signif-icance, the CRASC undertook the task of republishing it in a modern critical edition. Its author, Muhammad Qadi (1882–1942), was a man of multiple intellectual and civic engagements: a jurist, a practicing lawyer, and an active member of prominent political bodies, including the Federation of Algerian Muslim Elected Representatives and the Algerian Mus-lim Congress. In compiling this anthology, he brought together the finest poems of Algerian malhun poetry ac-cording to three principal criteria: a chronological distri-bution of texts spanning from the earliest to the most re-cent poets, a thematic diversity encompassing historical, political, and didactic poetry, and a deliberate recourse to vernacular Arabic of Bedouin character, conceived as a shared literary language bridging the educated elite and the popular classes. This anthology constitutes a rare literary and anthropo-logical document, reflecting the cultural heritage and col-lective identity of the Algerian people during a historical-ly critical period. It offers the reader both aesthetic pleas-ure and rich scholarly material, as it is laden with literary, linguistic, historical, and anthropological data pertaining to a significant historical era — one whose voices have rarely been recorded by official history and literature.
