abstract

The Algerian literary expression has always been a rich artistic phenomenon full of deep meanings. It refers to the various experiences of Algerians in aesthetic creation and in the search for their identity. One of the important features of this literature is its bilingualism, as it is shared, in terms of writing and creation, between the French language and the Arabic language. This linguistic aspect gives it a distinctive character and sets it apart from other literary experiences in the Arab world, particularly those of Moroccans and Tunisians, who share with it the feature of bilingual writing. This issue is particularly acute in the Algerian cultural space, hence the controversy that has arisen since the country’s independence and which intensified in the years following political liberalization, around the foundational legitimacy of the novel as a genre and its national identity. These two questions represent an important aspect of the Algerian cultural problematic. Hence the need to make an important part of Algerian narrative literature known: that written in Arabic.
