abstract

Various discussions held during national, regional, and international scientific events have led Algerian, Moroccan, Tunisian, Mauritanian, Libyan, and even Egyptian researchers to gauge the urgency and scientific importance of organizing, from a multidisciplinary perspective, a shared reflection on the use of proper names in the Maghreb. This particularly concerns toponyms and anthroponyms, examined both in their specificity and complementarity, along with all underlying onomastic categories: hydronyms, oronyms, hagionyms, ethnonyms, patronyms, first names, nicknames, pseudonyms, etc. The debates relate to the onomastic relationship of the Maghrebi people to their physical environment, to the naming in terms of proper names of their places, beliefs, and cults, of their group and lineage, of the plant and animal kingdoms—in short, to all forms of onomastic expression
