abstract

The international symposium, 'The Maghreb from the 1990s to the Present : The Emergence of a New Imaginary and New Forms of Writing,' builds upon previous conferences organized by the C.R.A.S.C. in Oran centered on the interrogation of literary texts. These include: • 'Rachid Boudjedra and the Productivity of the Text' (November 4–5, 2004), which led to the publication of the conference proceedings (CRASC, 2006). • 'Women's Writing: Reception, Discourse, and Representation' (November 18–19, 2006), with proceedings currently in preparation. Given its thematic scope, this upcoming conference seeks to explore, investigate, and analyze a novel, contemporary, prolific, dense, and diverse body of literary production across the three Maghreb nations and well beyond their borders. The Maghrebi imaginary continues to populate the metaphorical domain with works that are often striking and unexpected in their renewal, offering profound aesthetic and poetic innovations. The referentiality of these texts is fundamentally rooted in contemporary Maghrebi society as it grapples with its history and the construction of modernity. Consequently, this event centers on the renewal and immediate current state of the Maghrebi novel—examining its forms, techniques, writing devices, and discourses. Scholars will interrogate the current state of the Maghrebi novel to map out its various aspects, narratological and theoretical modalities, and discursive strategies. Ultimately, the objective is to capture the elements of this emerging poetics within Maghrebi literary discourse and grasp its recent local and international contributions, particularly in relation to the evolution of modern thought and its post-modern and post-colonial dimensions.
