abstract

Despite some progress in the status of women in recent years, women continue to face multiple difficulties that hinder the achievement of full equality and their effective integration into society ; likewise, their representation in political, economic, and social decision-making positions remains limited. Based on this issue, and as part of the preparations for the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing (China) in 1995, the United Nations convened this summit to promote equality, peace, and development, and to accelerate reforms related to the situation of women. In this context, the National Committee, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and under the supervision of the Center for Research in Social and Cultural Anthropology, organized a workshop entitled 'Women and Development'. This workshop aimed to highlight the situation of women in Algeria through the contributions of local researchers and actors, and to stimulate debate around four main axes : women and the economy; women, family, and population ; women and society ; and women and politics.
