abstract

The book "Water, City, and Environment", originating from the proceedings of the conference held on November 27 and 28, 2007, compiles the contributions presented during a scientific symposium dedicated to the relationships between water resources, urban development, and environmental stakes, particularly within the context of Maghrebi and Mediterranean cities. It brings together researchers from various disciplines - including geography, urban planning, hydrology, sociology, and environmental sciences- to analyze contemporary challenges linked to urban water management. The volume highlights that water constitutes a strategic resource whose availability, distribution, and quality heavily condition the evolution of cities. In many urban agglomerations, particularly in Algeria and developing countries, rapid urban growth, demographic pressure, and uncontrolled urbanization have exacerbated imbalances between water supply and demand. The authors thus emphasize the rising tensions between urban needs, infrastructure capacities, and natural constraints. A significant portion of the contributions is devoted to water management policies. The researchers analyze institutional frameworks, supply strategies, distribution networks, and governance issues. They demonstrate that water management cannot be effective without coordination among public actors, local authorities, and users, alongside integrated planning that incorporates environmental and social dimensions.
