abstract

Under the direction of sociologist Djamel Guerid, the book "Cultures d'entreprise" (1997) offers a critical reflection on organizational dynamics in Algeria, situated at the crossroads of a painful transition from a state-planned economy to a market-driven model. By deconstructing the premise that the firm is a purely technical and rational space, the various contributions conceptualize the enterprise as a prime locus for social hybridization and cultural production. The central problem thus revolves around the clash of rationalities, analyzing how modern production structures collide with the values of the broader society, such as familial, regional, or traditional solidarities. Through the study of structural shifts in professional status—notably the transition of managerial cadres from their roles as builders of the Nation-State to the imperatives of managerial performance—the book highlights the resistance and reinvention demonstrated by local actors in the face of globalization. In sum, this pioneering work demonstrates that industrial modernization cannot be a mere replication of Western models; rather, it serves as a mirror reflecting the contradictions and crises of a society undergoing comprehensive transformation.
