abstract

The book "How is History Taught in Algeria", edited by Hassan Remaoun and Mohamed Ghalem, offers a critical reflection on the content, methods, and objectives of history education in Algerian schools since independence. Published as part of the research conducted by the CRASC in Oran, the book analyzes how history textbooks contribute to the construction of national identity, political legitimization, and the transmission of collective memory. The authors demonstrate that history education in Algeria has long been shaped by a strong ideological dimension. After 1962, the Algerian state sought to reconstruct a national narrative capable of breaking away from French colonial historiography. This endeavor to 'rewrite' history aimed to rehabilitate the national past, highlight the liberation struggle, and consolidate national unity. However, the contributors point out that this orientation has sometimes led to a selective reading of the past, favoring an official memory at the expense of historical plurality.
