Urban Planning and Sustainable Development

During the 1990s, Algeria launched a widespread initiative to implement Master Plans for Urban Development (PDAU), alongside emerging debates on 'Major Urban Projects' (GPU). This experience has since been sidelined, resulting in a perceived failure that forces us to re-evaluate our position regarding 21st-century challenges. What, then, is the outcome of these urban plans whose guidelines were systematically applied across all Algerian cities? Concurrently, the heritage sector has seen a proliferation of initiatives, including specialized operational studies, civic mobilization, academic research, and institutional frameworks. Certain initiatives led to practical interventions demanding specialized expertise in architectural rehabilitation and restoration. However, a few embryonic projects highlight the significant difficulties in maintaining quality standards across both project management and execution.
